The Sweet 16 is...well sweet

Posted by Steven Myers on March 28, 2014 at 5:20 PM Comments comments (0)

It has been a while everyone.  In fact, it has been 14 years since the Cyclones have made it to this stage of the Big Dance.  The best team in Iowa State history (up to this point) was the last team to reach the Sweet 16.  They also made their way to the Elite 8 that year by besting Steve Lavin's UCLA Bruins.

This year's Cyclone squad is going for the same result in New York City.  This time the University of Connecticut stands in their way. ...

Is this the Year Cyclone Fans?

Iowa State fans would tell you that luck hasn't always been on their side unless it was accompanied by "bad," and to be fair they may be on to something. Case in point:

  • February 2004 in Lawrence, KS, Iowa State's Jared Homan shoots his 1st of 2 free throws. The ball bounces off the rim and Kansas, along with the officials, go down to the other side of the court. Uncontested by anyone wearing red and gold, Kansas makes a three pointer, which is allowed to count. Iow...

Streak is Over; Not the Season

Posted by Steven Myers on January 11, 2014 at 2:20 PM Comments comments (0)

Well, the streak is over. Oklahoma ruined the party for the Cyclones and won down in Norman 87-82. We knew the first loss had to come sometime, and it wasn't one of those TCU or Texas Tech losses. This is not a bad Oklahoma team and I am pretty confident that they will be in the NCAA tourney. The thing that worries me more than the loss is the ankle injury to Kane. Hopefully it is just a minor roll of the ankle, but even if it is, he only has 48hrs to recover prior to Kansas coming to town...

Fran suspended

Fran has been suspended 1 Game. I think it brings up some interesting questions.  I am all for the suspension. I think it is funny he got suspended for Fran bobblehead night... but we can now get one on Jan. 19.  Hope it has a red face.

The B1G suspending Fran is perplexing to me.  I  think he deserved a game, but now-- coaches can go off and show emotion and get suspended, but players can flip people off before a bowl game and not have any repercussions...

Good day in College basketball

Great day for ISU. Keep rolling.

Thank you, Notre Dame for beating Duke and Xavier for beating Butler. Iowa's RPI is going to rise.  Now Iowa just needs to bring it against Wisconsin.

10 things learned from the Outback Bowl

I needed some time for reflection.

Iowa lost 21-14 to LSU. Parts of the game were that close and parts weren't. It's like A tale of Two Cities. It was the best of times and worst of times... and sometimes that was on the same damned play.  Here are 10 things I learned.

10.  I hate moral victories, but to lose by 7 to a team that beat Auburn (who is playing for the National Championship) by 14 does mean something. It means Iowa hung in there. It...

Iowa Hoops returns December 31

Posted by Chuck on December 28, 2013 at 1:25 AM Comments comments (1)

Iowa Mens Basketball ended their non-conference at 11-2 and ranked in the top 25. They could've been 13-0 and 9-4 realistically... so 11-2 is fine. Time to start the B1G schedule against Nebraska, Dec. 31.

I had them going 12-1 in this section so 11-2 is not bad as I overestimate my hopes usually.

***Streaky shooting-- They need to make a few more from 3. Hopefully Oglesby will help, as he showed his promise against APB, but remember, he was AWFUL last yea...

Cyclones Take Over Hawaii

The Iowa State Men's Basketball team is going to be enjoying the Christmas Holiday on the beach (well maybe).  They are a part of the Diamond Head Classic Tournament that takes place from Dec 22nd-Dec 25th.  So I guess they will be spending it more on the hardwood, but I'm sure they will still find some time to have some fun.

They are the only ranked team in the field, but that won't make it an easy tourney to win.  The other teams that will try t...

Ready for a Hoopin Good Winter?

With Iowa State and Iowa both in the AP Top 25 poll at the same time in who knows how long, it got me thinking of the special year this could be for the state during another Midwest winter.  Hopefully both will be ranked when they meet on Dec. 13th so the nation takes notice.  Win or lose, both teams and fan bases will smiling alot during the conference season.

I said it at the end of the season last year and I am still sayin...

Hawkeyes Seeking Elusive Consistency

Special to Dear Old

Going into Game 5 of the season, the Hawkeyes are 4-0 with an average victory margin of 42 points. They host Penn at Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 6 p.m. Friday, and Iowa should have little or no trouble making the Quakers its sixth victim.

After Penn, the schedule does not get any easier. The Hawks open with Xavier in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas. Five of the next seven games t...
