Cyclones Take Over Hawaii

Posted by Steven Myers on December 19, 2013 at 8:00 PM

The Iowa State Men's Basketball team is going to be enjoying the Christmas Holiday on the beach (well maybe).  They are a part of the Diamond Head Classic Tournament that takes place from Dec 22nd-Dec 25th.  So I guess they will be spending it more on the hardwood, but I'm sure they will still find some time to have some fun.

They are the only ranked team in the field, but that won't make it an easy tourney to win.  The other teams that will try to come home as the champions are: George Mason, Hawaii, Akron, Oregon St., Boise St., St. Mary's, and South Carolina.  A couple of fun thoughts come to mind when looking at these teams.

  1. It probably won't happen, but to be able to play against Frank Martin again would be fun.  I always liked him as a coach, and he has always had respect for the Cyclones program.
  2. If Oregon St. and Iowa St. can win their first games, the Cyclones may have an opportunity to play in front of the President of the United States.  Yes, the coach for Oregon St., Craig Robinson, is the President's brother-in-law.
  3. Iowa St. could meet St. Mary's in the championship game, and I would really like to see us get some revenge for Drake, who was narrowly defeated by the Gaels earlier this year.  Also, it will mean that one of these teams would come away with their first loss.

Should the Cyclones get to the championship game, they will more than likely face either Boise St. or as mentioned above, St. Mary's.  Both of these teams will be in the NCAA Tournament and both could give Iowa St. a very hard time.  All games will be on ESPN U, so we should all be able to have some basketball with our Christmas festivities.
